The Float Trap is probably the oldest on the market and even today it finds a fairly widespread use.

With regard to construction, there are several minor variations, but the operating principle is always the same.

The principal advantage of the float trap is, that it discharges all condensate as soon as it presents itself, independent of its temperature. The main inherent disadvantage is that it will not discharge air. As a result this trap has to be provided with an air vent, to be opened periodically, particularly during start-up.

However, very often these valves are either forgotten to be opened, or to be closed, thus resulting in flooded heat exchangers, or in a considerable loss of live steam.

Frequently a float traps is therefore provided with an automatic air vent e which, in fact, is a secondary trap of the thermostatic type.

Installation:

The trap should be installed with the float arm in horizontal plane. Must be fitted below the drain point of the equipment.

Isolating valve should be installed upstream and downstream of the trap for safe maintenance.

Always open isolation valve slowly until normal operating conditions are achieved to avoid system shocks.

Maintenance:

The trap can be maintained without disturbing the piping connections. Ensure that trap is isolated upstream and downstream before attempting to dismantle it. Allow the trap to cool before dismantling.

Item 3 (gasket), 4-5-6 (valve assembly), 7 (ball float) and 8 (air vent) can be replaced bring the traps as new conditions.
